Dave Retzlaff (Inducted 1986)

Dave Retzlaff Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.

Dave Retzlaff has completed 18 years as head basketball coach at Fergus Falls Community College. The highlight of his career, through 1986, was coaching the 1984 Spartans to the state title and community college Region 13 championship, plus a berth in the National Tournament.
Through 1985, Retzlaff's teams had won nine consecutive Northwest Division titles, and 12 titles within the previous 15 years. He was Minnesota Community College Conference "Coach of the Year" in 1977, 1981, 1983, and 1984.
Qualifying for the state tournament has become almost a yearly event for the Spartans, led by Retzlaff, who took Fergus Falls CC to this tournament 13 times between 1971 and 1985. Although no longer coaching baseball, he led the 1971 Spartan baseball team to their first state title.
Hired for the 1969 season at the young age of 24, Retzlaff compiled a remarkable record of 270 wins and 157 losses through the 1986 season. In his 18 years at FFCC only three teams finished below .500 in won-lost records. And only one player has quit his teams in those 18 years.
A native of Cyrus, Minnesota, Retzlaff played football, basketball, and baseball in high school and basketball and baseball at the University of Minnesota, Morris. At FFCC he also holds the job of athletic director for Spartan athletics. He and his wife, Debra, have three sons, Ryan, Jason, and Justin.
Over the years Retzlaff has coached several all-state players and a few who gained All-American honors.
Most of his players come from west central Minnesota.
