Hub Hovland (Inducted 1986)

Hub Hovland Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.

When talking about star Otter athletes from the 1940s, the name Hub Hovland always comes to the forefront. A 1949 Fergus High grad, Hub also wins high praise as an outstanding teacher in vocational education in Fergus Falls.
He was most valuable player (MVP) in both football and basketball as an Otter athlete. Later, he played football and basketball at Bemidji State University. At Fergus High he was a 175-pounder as football tailback and as a basketball forward. At Bemidji State he was a 194-pounder as football fullback and basketball guard.
Hovland was honored a few years ago by Bemidji State when he was named to their Hall of Fame.
"Sports gave me an opportunity to go to college and earn a teaching degree that brought me back to my hometown and to all the people I know and love," says Hubb. "Sports was a big part of my life in grade school, high school, and college."
After graduating from Bemidji State, Hovland was in the military two years and then did some graduate work at Mankato State. He jumped at the opportunity to return to Fergus and teach while raising a family.
"In sports, the best award given to me was actually the opportunity to participate and represent my family and school in various athletic contests," he adds. "During the past many years I've especially enjoyed teaching in vocational education."
Hovland and his wife, Marilyn, have four children, Paul, Pam, Deb, and Don.
