Duane Baglien (Inducted 1986)

Duane Baglien Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.

Duane Baglien has etched his mark as one of, if not the greatest, high school basketball coaches in Minnesota history.
In Fergus Falls he is remembered most for leading the Otters to third place in the 1957 state basketball tournament, with Fergus Falls finishing the season with a record of 27-1, still the best in the school's history.
On a statewide basis, Baglien is noted most for his leadership of the Edina Hornets to three consecutive state basketball titles, from 1966 to 1968. During this period Edina won 69 consecutive basketball games, a state record.
Bringing Fergus Falls to the state tournament in 1957 vaulted Baglien into his position at Edina High School. He took the reins as Hornet coach the next year. In 1964 Edina participated in its first state basketball tourney, finishing third like the Otters had done for Baglien seven years before.
Baglien coached basketball in Fergus Falls for the 1955, 1956, and 1957 seasons. His 1956 squad narrowly missed a state berth, losing to Glenwood in the region finals by only three points.
Many Fergus Falls sports fans first came to know Baglien when he was a centerfielder on the 1950 Fergus Falls Red Sox baseball team that won the state title. During his college days at the University of Minnesota he was captain of the Gopher baseball team. Later, he coached Edina High School's baseball team to the state title in 1968.
Baglien is married to the former Marcella Faunce of Fergus Falls. They have six children, Rolf, Judy, Scott, Ross, Kevin, and Barbara. His brother-in-law is fellow Fergus Falls Hall of Famer Evie Faunce, Marcella's brother. Baglien is presently a school administrator at Edina.
