Post 612 Wins Battle of the Axe Championship

The Fergus Falls VFW Post 612 baseball team chopped down Springfield and Madison to win the first Battle for the Axe at Runestone Days in Kensington, Saturday June 17. 

The first game for Post 612 was against a talented Springfield club that saw Post 612 come out on top 3-2. Matt Johnson (5ip, 2r, 1er, 7h, 2k, 0bb) started and earned his third win of the year, which leads the team in victories. Jaydon Ollila earned his first hold, pitching 1 1/3 inning, allowing 1 hit and striking out 3, in relief of Johnson. Closer Nic Pearson (2/3 ip, 0r, 1h, 1k) earned his 3rd save in 4 tries as he recorded the last two outs.

Post 612 scored 3 in the third on 3 hits and a walk to take the lead. Ashwin Stratton (2-3, RBI) led all Post 612 hitters with 2 hits. Johnson (1-1), Pearson (1-3), Christian Norby (1-3) and Chase Jensen (1-2, RBI) collected the rest of the hits for Post 612.

With their first round victory Post 612 would take on the Madison VFW team for the Championship. 

Fergus Falls VFW Post 612 pitchers Jaydon Ollila and Christian Norby combined to throw a one hit shutout for Post 612 to win the Battle for the Axe 3-0, over Madison VFW.

Jaydon Ollila earned the win for Fergus Falls VFW Post 612. He pitched three innings, surrendering zero runs, zero hits, striking out nine, and walking one. Christian Norby recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Fergus Falls VFW Post 612.

Cole Knudson, Ashwin Stratton, Jaden Norby, Cole Fronning, and Brock Kotschevar each managed one hit to lead Fergus Falls VFW Post 612. Fergus Falls VFW Post 612 didn't commit a single error in the field.

VFW Post 612 improves to 10-1-1 for the 2017 season. In the last 7 games Post 612 has only allowed 5 earned runs and they are set to avenge their only loss of the year when they play host to the Alexandria Reds on Monday night at Legion Field at 5pm and 7pm. Post 612 will travel on Tuesday to play Moorhead Jr Legion and finish the week at home (Legion) against Wahpeton Jr Legion on Friday night, 5pm and 7pm.
