Ottertail Central defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 6-1 on Thursday to record their first win of the high school baseball season.
OTC took the lead in the fourth inning when they scored two runs. Brodey Rocholl singled to get things started and Cole Brandner followed with another base hit. Rocholl then scored on a hit by Kirby Lohse. Nic Haugen entered the game as a pinch-runner and scored later in the inning on a throwing error.
Coach Ryan Hendrickson said this about Haugen, "Nic really showed that he is a really good teammate. He sacrificed his playinig time, because of the re-entry rule, to give us more speed on the bases. Because of his unselfishness we were able to take advantage of our opponents mistake. Nic is a great teammate and person. He is constantly looking for ways to improve himself and today he made his team better."
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the seventh inning. Daxton Olson led the inning off with a five pitch walk and was bunted over by Drake Larsen.
"We have worked hard on our bunting of late because we haven't been very good at it this year. After missing a couple bunting opportunities agains today, I had to go back to what I saw this week out of Drake. He worked really hard at his bunting this week and he laid down a beauty today."
Isaac Roers then reached base on an error and move up on a wild pitch. Rocholl followed with a huge two-run single.
"I can't say enought about the leadership Brodey brings to our team," noted Hendrickson. "Anyone that has taught or coached Brodey would say he is a great leader and teammate. He has really been swinging a very hot bat lately."
Ottertail Central also had some defensive highlights as Bennet Cameron and Max Naddy both had an outfield assist. Cole Brandner handled all six of his chances at third base flawlessly.
Drake Larsen (7IP, 1R, 7H, 2K) earned the win.
"I saw a very confident Drake Larsen today," added Hendrickson. "He had great command and mental toughness out there. WDC is a good hittinig team with great energy in their dugout, but today we had a pitcher on a mission. I could not be any more proud of Drake today with the physical part of his game and even more so with his mental game."
OTC will play West Central Area in Barrett on Friday and will go to Pelican Rapids Monday for a double header.
