The M State Fergus Falls Spartan athletic department held their 44th All Sports Banquet Monday April 24 at Pebble Lake Golf Course. This event recognizes the individual and team accomplishments of the Spartan athletic teams. Also included in the evening is the selection by the coaching staff of the Student Athlete of the Year and the Coaches Award.
Female Student Athlete of the Year
Haley Poehler, a sophomore from Ada, was honored as the Female Student Athlete of the Year. Haley is an outstanding student and participated at a very high level in basketball and softball. As a freshman, Haley was honored for her basketball excellence by being selected to the All Region 13 team and being named 1st Team All Division. In softball she led the Lady Spartans in batting average, hitting at a .386 clip and played left field.
As a sophomore, Haley was again named 1st Team All Region, 1st Team All Division and All Defensive team in basketball. In softball, she is one of the leading hitters for the Lady Spartans with a batting average of .360 and she also has three triples and 11 runs batted in.
In Haley’s basketball career, she has lead the team both years in field goal percentage, points scored, rebounds and was selected as the MVP by her teammates. Haley also found her way into the Lady Spartan basketball record book by becoming the career leader in rebounds. Haley was also honored as the MCAC Player of the Week twice in basketball. She will be attending NDSU in the Fall.
Male Student Athlete of the Year
Jay Zimmerman, a sophomore from Elbow Lake, has been named the Male Student Athlete of the Year. Jay has been a member of the Spartan Men’s Basketball team the past 2 years. During the 2016-17 season, Jay led M State in field goal percentage, total points, rebounds, blocked shots, and free throws made. Jay finished his Spartan career with 542 points and 323 rebounds. Jay was known on the basketball floor as a very intelligent and strong competitor with great footwork and post play on the inside.
Jay is also a member of the 2017 Spartan baseball team. He is one of M State’s top pitchers out of the bullpen who has come in and shut down opponents in many key spots. As a relief pitcher, Jay has compiled a 1.08 ERA while earning one win and one save.
Jay has accumulated a 4.0 GPA and will graduate from M State with his Associates of Arts Degree. He is currently undecided on his college choice but plans to major in Computer Engineering.
Male and Female Coaches Awards
The Spartan coaching staff also selects a male and female recipient for the Coaches Award. This award is presented to a student athlete that has been extremely important to the athletic department in attitude and willingness to assist where needed.
Selected as the recipient of the Women’s Coaches Award is sophomore Doranna Blascyk. Doranna has participated in volleyball and softball both years at M State. She has excelled in the classroom despite her busy schedule in sports and working at the college. Her contribution to the athletic department goes far beyond her accomplishments in Lady Spartan athletics. Doranna has a positive personality and has been a true leader for Lady Spartan athletics. Doranna is a graduate of West Central Area High School.
Abram Aho is the athletic departments’ selection for the Men’s side of the Coaches Award. Abram is a 2014 graduate of Kennedy Secondary High School. He participated in football two seasons while at M State and is currently the Lady Spartan softball student assistant coach. Abram has also been academically successful while maintaining an extremely busy schedule. He has been a person that is always willing to help and his great personality makes him a favorite on campus.
