Jack Halland (Inducted 1986)

Jack Halland Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.

Through 1986 Jack Halland, a 1957 Fergus High grad, still held high school track records in Fergus Falls.  An all-around athlete at Fergus High, he later played college sports at the University of Florida and University of Arizona.

He was a four-sport participant at Fergus High in the 1950's, something not uncommon in the days before specialization in high school athletics.  His sports included football, basketball, golf, and track.

A running back in football for coach Norm Galloway, the 5-foot 9-inch and 170-pound Halland was co-captain and an all-state selection his senior year when the Otters went undefeated with an 8-0 won-lost record.  He played in the 1957 Minnesota North/South all-star game, scoring the North's only touchdown in a 6-6 tie.

In track he was a star athlete in both the 100 and 200 yard dashes, taking first in both of those events at state track meets.  One other time he placed third in the state 100 yard dash, a remarkable overall effort.  In that there weren't enough athletes for spring sports, he also participated in the state golf tourney his senior year.

Halland played football on scholarship for two years at the University of Florida in Gainesville and one year of track.  He completed his college football career at the University of Arizona, Tucson, as an offensive and defensive halfback, graduation in 1962 with a business degree.

He is now a real estate broker and investor in Arizona, living in Scottsdale.  He and his wife, Sherry, own and operate the company that was started by his father, Gil Halland, in 1959.  Halland has three childresn, Michael, Jon, and Julie, and two step-children, Mike and Mark.
