Charles Beck (Inducted 1986)

Charles Beck Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.

Charles Beck is better known as an artist and few people are probably aware that he was an outstanding athlete at Fergus Falls High School and later at Concordia College, Moorhead.

Widely known as a renowned artist in the Fergus Falls area and the Upper Midwest, Beck has received recognition via the news media for many years.  "I've been influenced by the thing I'm most in contact with," he says.  That is the land.

His paintings, woodcuts, and other works can be seen all across the nation.  Of late he has pursued woodcuts and carving water fowl in wood, the latter representing Beck's first three-dimensional work.

A 1941 graduate of Fergus Falls High School, Beck participated in football, basketball, and track.  His two sons, Karl and Paul, were later outstanding athletes in their own right at Fergus High.

But it was at Concordia College in Moorhead where Beck really blossomed as an athlete in the 1940's.  He was a star athlete before and after military service during World War II.

He was an all-conference college football end in 1942, 1946, and 1947.  Beck played basketball for the Cobbers in '41, '42, '46, and '47.  Baseball ws one of his college activities in 1941 and 1942.

Art has always been his livelihood.  Beck painted signs for 10 years and has also taught art on a part-time basis for over 25 years at Fergus Falls Community College.  He holds additional degrees from Iowa State University and the Instituto Allende, Mexico.  In 1979 he received an honorary doctorate degree from Concordia College, his alma mater.

He and his wife, Joyce, have three children, Karl, Carolyn, and Paul.
