Tom Uvaas (Inducted 2001)

Tom Uvaas Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, June 9, 2001.

The school year 2000-2001 marked the 26th season of swimming coaching for Tom Uvaas. This spring he received his fourth Section 3A Coach of the Year honors. Over the years he's coached both boys and girls swimmers.
"I thoroughly enjoy swim coaching," says Uvaas, who often quotes French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau:
"To live is not merely to breathe. It is to act. It is to make use of our organs, senses, faculties, of all those parts of ourselves which give us the feeling of existence. The man who has lived longest is not the man who has counted most years, but he who has enjoyed life most."
A 1968 graduate of Oshkosh High School in Wisconsin, Uvaas participated in high school cross country and track. He competed as a swimmer on YMCA and AAU teams. Uvaas later participated in swimming in the collegiate ranks at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, from 1968 to 1972.
Uvaas participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics swimming nationals in 1969 and in 1971. He was named most valuable swimmer at U-Wisconsin, River Falls, in 1972 when he also won the scholar/athlete award.
He and his wife, Kathy, have two daughters, Trina and Kayley.
