Tim Cashman (Inducted 2001)

Tim Cashman Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, June 9, 2001.

Mention the name Tim Cashman and two things come to mind: an outstanding Fergus Falls High School running back in the late 1950s, and a backup running back on the Minnesota Gopher Rose Bowl teams in the early 1960s.
Cashman played for Fergus Falls Hall of Fame football coaches Norm Galloway and Rocky Elton, and graduated from high school in 1959. Knowing he could play regularly for a Division II school, he opted to become a Minnesota Gopher player and was happy to assume the role as backup halfback. The Gophers were national champions in 1960 and made two consecutive trips to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
"It was great playing with the Gopher standouts like quarterback Sandy Stephens, running back Bill Muncie, and linemen Bobby Bell and Carl Eller, to name a few," says Cashman. "And not everyone can say they placed in a Rose Bowl game. We went twice and took home one victory, over UCLA."
At Fergus High Cashman, in addition to football, also participated in basketball and track. "I take pride in being a former Otter athlete," he says, "and I've remained close friends with many former Otter players over the years."
Cashman, who is owner of Cashman Nursery in Minot, North Dakota, served briefly as football coach at Fergus Falls Community College in the early 1970s. "It was satisfying to give something back to the community," he says, "Fergus has great people and support of athletics isn't better anywhere in the state of Minnesota."
"Coaching Tim was something I really enjoyed," says Elton, who also played college football at the University of Minnesota. "Tim was an exciting player, whether it be runs from the backfield, kickoff returns, defense, or you name it. He had a great attitude and was very coachable. Tim was one of the toughest players I ever coached. He had a high pain threshold."
