Mark B. Foss Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, June 9, 2001.
 
      Mark B. Foss, a 1945 graduate of Fergus Falls High School and an all-around athlete, made his mark at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, where he starred as left end on the Fighting Sioux football team.
      While at UND Foss was named to the North Central Conference first team in 1948 and in 1950. The latter year he ranked 14th in the nation for NCAA pass-receiving yardage. He also was placekicker and kickoff man in 1949 and 1950. The 1950 Fighting Sioux football team was selected as the top North Dakota athletic team by the Associated Press.
      In 1980 Foss was named to the UND Athletic Hall of Fame and in 1994 he was selected to the 60-person UND Alumni Association's All-Century Football Team.
      At Fergus Falls High School Foss participated in basketball and track, in addition to football, and received honorable mention on the 1944 Minnesota all-state football team.
      In 1946-47 Foss was a member of the ten-person U.S. Army basketball team at Fort Benning, Georgia, whose record was 31-8, the best record for a military team that year, and they also won the Southeastern AAU Basketball Tournament in Atlanta. The team later participated at the National AAU tournament in Denver, won by the Phillip 66 Oilers.
      Foss graduated from UND with two degrees in civil engineering, a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1955. Foss served on the UND Alumni Association Board of Directors for nine years, and since 1972 has been an alumni member of the UND Athletic Board of Control.
      Following two terms of military service, Foss was an engineer and principal owner of Foss Associates, Architecture, Engineering, and Interiors for 45 years in Fargo and Moorhead.
      Foss married UND grad Peggy Dougherty in 1951 and they had seven children. Peggy died in 1987. In 1989 he married Grace Lawrence who died in 1995. In July 2000 he married Lillian Cole who has four children. They reside in Fargo.
