Harry Olson (Inducted 1990)

Harry Olson Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, July 28, 1990.

The 1930s produced many excellent Otter athletes and among them was the late Harry Olson, brother of Mel Olson who was inducted as a charter member into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. Harry Olson graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1939.
He played football for the Otters in 1937 and 1938 and basketball in 1937, 1938, and 1939. Harry was captain of the Otter basketball team in 1939. That same year he was named to the all-district basketball team as well as the all-region basketball squad.
Olson was recipient of most valuable player awards in both football and basketball at Fergus Falls High School. For many years the awards were known as the T.H. Johnson Award in football and W.D. Bruce Award for basketball.
The 1930s also produced many fine athletes who were part of the Fergus Falls Red Sox baseball teams. Harry Olson was among them, just like his brother, Mel. Harry was an outstanding pitcher and third baseman in 1939, 1940, and 1941. He had been a member of the Fergus Falls American Legion baseball team in both 1937 and 1938.
The 5-11 160-pound athlete served his country during World War II and attended the University of Minnesota after the war, graduating in 1949. He later worked as a veterinarian on the State Livestock Sanitary Board., based in St. Paul. He and his wife, Erma, had two children, David and Jennie.
Olson is the fifth deceased member to be inducted into the Fergus Falls Sports Hall of Fame. Four were honored posthumously as charter members in 1986, namely Fran Conito, John Hermes, Norm Galloway, and Win Brockmeyer.
