Lee Drechsel (Inducted 1990)

Lee Drechsel Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Luncheon, July 28, 1990.

Coaching Crookston High School to the 1980 state Class A football title was a top highlight in the career of former Otter athlete Les Drechsel who also participated in sports at Bemidji State University.
A 1951 Fergus High grad, Drechsel was a football and basketball standout for the Otters. On the gridiron he was quarterback and linebacker and was a guard on the basketball court. At Bemidji State he played football four years, as a fullback and linebacker.
The 5-10 230-pound Drechsel was football co-captain for Bemidji State in 1954 and was named to the all-conference squads in both 1953 and 1954.
Drechsel started his coaching career at Parkers Prairie (head football and assistant basketball and baseball) from 1955 to 1957. After two years in the U.S. Army he coached at Ada (head football with four undefeated seasons, head track, assistant in basketball, and athletic director) from 1959 to 1971. For the past 19 years he has served as head football coach at Crookston, head track coach (8 years), assistant basketball coach (3 years), athletic director since 1981, and administrative assistant (5 years).
Several coaching honors have come his way over the years. He was Minnesota Football Association State Coach of the Year in 1980, the same year his Crookston squad won the state title. Drechsel was head coach of the outstate all-star football team in 1981.
Les was named Minnesota Football Association Region 8 Coach of the Year in 1967 and 1973, received a 25-year award from the Association, served as Association president in 1970-71, and has compiled a football coaching record of 202-84-9. He was named to the Bemidji State Hall of Fame in 1979 and received the Chamber of Commerce President's Award in 1981. He is also recipient of two Lions Club "E" for excellence awards. Lastly, he was named Region 8-A Athletic Director of the Year in 1989 and his teams have won five District 30 track championships.
