Chuck Weiss Biography from the Hall of Fame Sports Banquet, April 28, 1986.
In the latter part of the 1950s, Chuck Weiss was to Fergus Falls High School athletics what Harmon Killebrew later became to the Minnesota Twins in the 1960s. Weiss was indeed the "brawn and guts"of Fergus High athletics, particularly his senior year in 1956-57.
As a running back in football, Weiss led Fergus Falls High School to a perfect 8-0 record in the fall of 1956. He was elected the most valuable player in basketball for 1957, the year the Otters took third place in the state tournament. The combined football and basketball record his senior year was an incredible 35 wins and only a single loss.
The talents of Chuck Weiss did not go unnoticed. He was recruited in football by the University of Colorado at Boulder, later excelling as a fullback. In 1960 he was a 6-2 and 204-pound senior running back, gaining widespread recognition. His talents were best described in the 1960 college football program:
"Weiss, along with guard Joe Romig, has been Colorado's all-around football player this fall...he is a complete football player-an outstanding plunger, fine blocker, faker, and outstanding defensive cornerback...he is the best fullback in Big Eight, in first six conference games he outgained every opposing fullback...was especially brilliant in Iowa State and Oklahoma victories as he scored the winning touchdowns in tremendous second efforts, twisting to the side and lunging over the goal after apparently being stacked up at the one-yard line...he has been regular for three years and is Colorado's leading rusher this fall..."
The versatile Weiss was lauded as one of the finest college football players in the nation. He was drafted by Denver and later tried out with the Dallas Cowboys. As a pro, Weiss had the potential to become an outside linebacker. Unfortunately, he reinjured a knee, thus ending his chances in the professional football ranks.
A self-employed businessman in material handling equipment, Weiss now lives in San Jose, California. He is the father of four children and the grandfather of one.
