The Pierz Pioneers hosted the West Central Area Knights in the quarterfinal round of the Section 6AA football playoffs on Tuesday night and got off to a fast start on the way to a 48-12 win.
The Pioneers received the opening kickoff and on their first play from scrimmage, John Omann took the handoff for 60 yards and a touchdown. The PAT kick failed and Pierz had a 6-0 lead just seconds into the game.
On the Knights third play from scrimmage, Omann picked off a Knight pass and ran it all the way back to the one yard line where fullback Cody Stengl scored on the next play. Stengl also ran in the two point conversion to make it 14-0 just 80 seconds into the game.
The Knights then mishandled the ensuing kickoff and were pinned down on their one yard line for three plays. After punting the ball away, Pierz ran 6 consecutive running plays until Stengl scored again on a 6 yard run. Travis Kahl's PAT kick made it 21-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Knights then started to move the ball on a nice 12-play drive inside Pioneer territory where they finally turned it over on downs at the Pioneer 20 yard line. Pierz then had an 8-yard run by Omann, a 22-yard pass from Kahl to Andy Kretschmar, a 42 yard run by Omann, and then an 8 yard touchdown run by Mitch Owitalla. Kahl's extra point kick made it 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Knights turned it over on downs and the powerful Pierz offense had another 6-play drive capped off by an Omann 11 yard run. Kahl's kick made it 35-0.
The Knights got the ball back and on the second play from scrimmage, Kahl intercepted another Knight pass and ran it back 23 yards for a touchdown. Kahl kicked the PAT to make it 42-0.
The Knights put together two more decent drives in the second quarter, but could not score. Pierz took over with two minutes to play and used a couple of timeouts to stop the clock setting up another score right before half on a 2 yard run by Stengl. The PAT kick failed and the Pioneers led 48-0 at the half. Pierz had 20 carries for 214 yards rushing in the first half.
There was no scoring in the third quarter. Bryce Olson caught two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter from Colton Blascyk. The first covering 36 yards and the second covering 23 yards. The PAT run failed on the first and the PAT pass failed on the second. Cole Amundson had some good hard earned rushing yards on both drives.
Amundson capped off a successful year running the football as he carried 18 times for 82 yards and ended the season with over 700 yards rushing. Blascyk completed 7-of-20 passes for 100 yards putting him just over 1,000 yards passing for the season. Bryce Olson caught 6 of those passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Tucker Belgum led the Knights in tackles with 11 and Cody Blehr followed with 7. Jake Long recovered a fumble for the Knights.
