Play Ball!

Play Ball!  One of the greatest phrases in the English language in my opinion.  The college baseball season is underway and the M State Spartans are about to embark on a trip to Tucson, Arizona that will see them play ten games in six days.

First year head coach Nick Lewis heads south with fourteen sophomores and eleven freshmen.  The Spartans will be looking at 12 different pitchers as they look to solidify their rotation and firm up their lineup.  We will be posting daily stories on the outcome of their games, beginning on Saturday, March 14 when the Spartans open up with games against Williston State College and the Marian University JV team.  Lewis is a Fergus Falls High School graduate.

Former Spartan and Otter Peter Gaustad earned his first win as a member of the Minnesota State University Mavericks with four scoreless innings of relief in a 3-2 win over Ashland University.  Gaustad allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two batters.  The Mavericks are in the midst of an 8 day spring trip to Florida which will see them play 10 games.  They have won 5 of their first 6 contests.  Gaustad was twice named to the All-MCAC team at M State, going 9-2 with 89 strikeouts in 80 innings over his two year Spartan career.

Zach Rengel, another former Otter, will begin his junior season at Concordia University-St. Paul when his team participates in games in Tucson, beginning on Wednesday.  The Golden Bears will play eight games in seven days.  Rengel was 5-3 with a 2.22 earned run average during his sophomore season, striking out 31 batters in 52 innings and making 9 starts.

While those former Otters are just starting their season, Sydney Schultz has seen her basketball season at Bethel University come to an end.  It was a memorable run for the Royals, who finished the season 21-7, receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships for the first time in nearly 20 years.  Bethel won 13 of their last 15 games.  Schultz averaged 8.9 points per game, hitting 52-of-159 3's for 32.7%.

Hurley Competes in Final Big Ten Swimming Championships

Fergus Falls High School graduate Mike Hurley competed for the Indiana Hoosiers in his last Big Ten Swimming Championship last week at the University of Iowa.

As team captain, Mike scored 25 points for the Hoosiers in the meet for a career total 80 points spanning four years of Big Ten Championships- all individual events. He currently ranks as Indiana University’s fourth fastest individual to swim the 200IM at 1:44.15 and the 5th fastest individual to swim the 100 breaststroke at 53.10. He can still improve that by his last competition as a Hoosier in the Division 1 NCAA championship held on March 26 -29 at the University of Iowa. Mike has qualified for nationals in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Mike was also the Indiana recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award that was presented to him on the final day of the Big Ten Championship.

In closing here is a pic of Mike before his 4th place finish with a time of 1.44.15 in the 200IM A Championship final. When a Hoosier makes the finals you give the IU symbol for the Hoosier fans! Here's the U part of IU!!
