Eggen Signs Letter of Intent with Lady Spartans

Minnesota State Community and Technical College women’s basketballcoach Janice Hendrickson has announced the signing of Heidi Eggen.

Heidi is a 5'8" forward from Ada-Borup. She averaged 8.7 points per game,shooting 52.7% from the field. Eggen attacks the basket well on offense and is capable of defending all positions.

Heidi comes from a successful high school basketball program. She's played in three high school state tournaments and was selected Pine to Prairie Conference All-Conference in 2013 and 2014, and Academic All State in 2014.

“Heidi has the ability to be a great player for us,” stated Coach Hendrickson. “She’s a tough kid with knowledge of the game. We look forward to coaching Heidi and seeing what she can to at our level."

Ada-Borup high school Coach David Smart added, "Heidi is ready for that next stepand I really feel she has the work ethic and talent to contribute at thecollegiate level."

Heidi is the daughter of Jason and Jenny Eggen.

Pokorney Commits to Bethel College

Sophomore, Spring Valley, MN native, Devin Pokorney has decided to take his game to the MIAC next season when he suits up for Bethel University. Bethel is located in St. Paul, MN. He plans on majoring in Bio-Kinetics at Bethel, or Exercise Science as it is commonly referred to at many institutions.

This season, Devin a 6’4 forward for M State-Fergus Falls, averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds while shooting 51% from the field and 36% from three. He also shot 76% from the free-throw line in 23 games. He scored a season high 27 versus Riverland, hitting nine of ten free-throws and grabbing a season high eight rebounds.

Head Coach, Brandon Colvin had this to say, “I am extremely happy for Devin, I believe Bethel is a great fit for him basketball wise, and especially academically as it is highly regarded in his major of study.” Colvin added “We will miss Devin’s work ethic and what he brought to us with his shooting touch, I have no doubt he will be successful at his next stop.”

Ford Signs with Waldorf

Redshirt freshman, Thomas Ford, a 6’3 forward has signed a letter of intent to Waldorf College. Waldorf is a NAIA program in Forest City, IA. They finished 16-10, including a 10-4 record in Northstar Conference play, under third year head coach, Nigel Jenkins.

Coach Jenkins was happy with the signing, “I’m very happy to have Thomas join our program. He is a great young man whose best basketball is still ahead of him. His defense, rebounding and athletic ability will be a huge asset to us.”

Ford, a Minneapolis, MN native and graduate of South high school started 21 of 27 games for the Spartans this season. He averaged 7.5 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 46% from the field and 69% from the free-throw line.

Head coach, Brandon Colvin had this to add, “I am extremely happy for Thomas, he worked hard on and off the court this season and I believe he will be a great addition for Coach Jenkins just as he was for us.” Colvin added, “It will be hard to replace not only the stats that show up but the intangibles such as how hard he played the game.”

Spartans Earn MCAC Honors

Two members of the Spartan baseball team have received weekly MCAC honors for their performances during games played the week of March 31-April 6.

Sophomore Pete Gaustad was named MCAC Southern Division Pitcher of the Week.  Gaustad tossed a complete game, five hitter allowing no earned runs in a 2-1 victory over Mesabi Range.  Gaustad (2-0, 0.00 ERA) struck out 11 and walked only one batter.

Freshman third baseman Ryan Scanlon batted .384 (5-13) for the Spartans with a home run, double, 2 runs batted in and scored 3 times.  Scanlon was named the Southern Division Player of the Week in the MCAC.

Rund and Bruggeman Perform with All-Stars

Austin Rund's Maroon Team played Ryan Bruggeman's Blue Team in the second game of the Minnesota Boys High School All-Star Basketball Series last Friday night at Halenbeck Hall on the campus of St. Cloud State University.  The Blue team came out on top winning 144-128.  In the earlier game the Gold Team beat the Green Team 113-102.

Bruggeman, a standout for the Pelican Rapids Vikings, scored 27 big points to lead his team. Bruggeman has made his college decision and will be attending Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall and will play basketball for the Mustangs.  Rund, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Fergus Falls Otters, scored 12 points, pulled down 9 rebounds and dished off 4 assists.  Rund has announced his decision to attend Concordia College in Moorhead and play basketball for the Cobbers.

Saturday the teams played at Macalester College and saw another exciting game with all teams once again scoring in triple digits.  Rund pumped in three bombs from behind the arc for 9 points. Bruggeman dropped in 17 points and dished off 11 assists.  The games were action packed with some dazzling basketball play.   

"It was really exciting to play with the best players in the state! There are so many great basketball players in Minnesota!  I felt very honored to represent the community of Fergus Falls and my team," said Austin Rund.

"The All Star committee makes this event a very memorable experience for all the players.  It was a great way for all the guys to celebrate the end of their outstanding high school careers," said Coach Dave Rund

The Maroon team was missing 3 of their players.  Stanford bound Reid Travis from State champ DeLaSalle, Jon Sobaski, from Prior Lake heading to NDSU, and Jeff Jones from Washburn who was Mr. MN Football and is headed to Minnesota to play football.
