Gervais Shines for UNO at Oxbow

Junior transfer Lucas Gervais had an impressive three rounds of golf over the last two days at Oxbow as he participated as an individual golfer in the Erv Kaiser Invitational, hosted by NDSU.  Gervais, a member of the University of Nebraska-Omaha golf team, placed fourth overall with a 3-round total of 221, including a 2-under par 70 in his final round of the tournament.

Fund Raisers on the Schedule

Fund raisers are on the schedules of a couple of area schools with special events centered around athletic events.  The dates are Saturday, September 21 at Underwood and Thursday, September 26 at Evansville.

On Saturday, Underwood Physical Education instructor and Coach Ryan Hendrickson will be hosting the 'UHS Homecoming Family Fun Run'.  This 2 mile run/walk encourages families to register together with the motto of 'Health Starts at Home'.  The cost is $15 per runner with student registration free if they are registered with an adult.  The event will start and end at the Underwood High School football field with grilling to follow.  Runners receive a free meal consisting of a brat, chips and water.  Additional brats will be available for $2 each.  Non-runners can partake of a meal for a free will donation.

All proceeds from this event will go directly into the Underwood Physical Education Department and Weight Room fund.  Registration forms can be obtained at the Underwood School Office.

On Thursday, September 26 at the Evansville School Gymnasium, the Brandon-Evansville lady Chargers will be hosting a match against the Ashby Arrows.  This night has been designated as a fundraising activity to help seventh-grader Jordan Nohre and her family.  Jordan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia last spring and the Brandon-Evansville volleyball team wants to help.

"Currently we are wearing orange shoe laces to recognize both Jordan's fight and because it is Leukemia Awareness Month," stated B-E Head Volleyball Coach Kelly Olson.  "I know the greatest thing about a small community is the fact that when one of us is hurting, the members of that community respond.  There have been many efforts to help the Nohre family, all very successful.  We are hoping we can also help by getting the word out and getting as many people in the gym, partaking in the activities, making small donations of either money or time, or just being there to recognized the hardships Jordan and her family are going through right now."

Fans are asked to where as much orange as they can to the gym.  Orange shoe laces will be on sale for $5 and orange ribbons will be given out when a donation is given to Jordan.  There will be a 50/50 bucket and serving contests between sets.

The C-team begins the action at 5:00pm, followed by the JV match at 6:00pm and the varsity match at 7:30pm.  All proceeds from the night will go directly to the Nohre family.

Little Eight Volleyball Athlete of the Week Announced

Retired Ashby volleyball coach Brenda Johnson is coordinating the naming of a Little Eight Conference Volleyball Player of the Week this season.  Each week we will be publishing that information on www.craigolsonsports.com.  The first winner of the award is junior middle hitter Mariah Hansen of the Brandon-Evansville lady Chargers.

In her teams three matches against Henning, Hillcrest and Underwood Mariah had a total of 24 kills, averaged 12 digs per match, served 83% and racked up 20 aces.

Coach Kelly Olson said, "Mariah is a steady player on the court.  She plays 5 of the 6 rotations and had a 94% passing efficiency in the three matches."

Anna Monke Commits to UMD

Fergus Falls high school senior Anna Monke has made a verbal commitment to play basketball for the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Monke joined teammates Brianna Rasmusson (NDSU-volleyball) and Bailey Strand (UND-basketball) in making a commitment before their senior years began.  All three went over 1,000 career points during their junior seasons with Anna reaching that milestone in her final game of the year.  Monke averaged 10.2 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game last year for the Otters.

"I am extremely happy for Anna and her decision to be a Bulldog," said Fergus Falls Head Coach Brad Strand.  "She has worked hard and played countless games the past few years to improve her skills and I know she will have an excellent career in Duluth, but first, now she can enjoy her senior year as an Otter!  Anna brings toughness and a great attitude to the court every day for the Otters.  She no longer plays alongside her sister, Mariah, and Hanna Swenson in the post so we are now going to need Anna to dominate the paint for us to be successful.  She is a post that can play both inside and outside which is a great luxury and we will need her to attack our opponents' weaknesses.  Anna will need to bring her toughness and physical strength each and every time she steps on the floor to help the Otters win games this season."

The Bulldogs, members of the Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, finished last season with a 14-13 record.
