Masten Making Hockey History at Bethel, Magnusson Scholar Athlete Again
Fergus Falls High School graduate and Bethel junior Cristina Masten is at it again, and so in FFHS alum and Minnesota State-Mankator senior hockey player Erika Magnusson!

Masten finished off a historic 2012-13 regular season with a brilliant performance against Saint Mary's over the weekend. The Royals' star forward scored six points in the split with the Cardinals - five goals and one assist - while setting a new Bethel school record for goals in a season. She also tied the Royals' single-season points mark while leading her team back to the MIAC Playoffs. For her record-setting performance, Masten was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week. The award is the second in the last three weeks for Masten and the third for a Bethel Royal. Goaltender Jess Newstrom won the award on November 19th.

Another Fergus Falls graduate, Erika Magnusson, a senior at Minnesota State-Mankato, has been honored as a WCHA Scholar Athlete for a third time.  The Mavericks, seeded sixth, travel to third-seeded North Dakota this weekend for the opening round of the WCHA playoffs looking to return to the WCHA Final Four for the first time since 2008-09.

"The announcement of our annual WCHA Scholar-Athletes is always a very special time of the year," said Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod, Associate Commissioner Sara R. Martin, Michigan Technological University Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret (Chair, men’s league) and University of Minnesota Duluth Faculty Representative Al Mensinger (Chair, women’s league) in a joint statement. "It is an opportunity for both the Association and our member teams to publically acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments of these young men and women and pay tribute to the amount of time, hard work and dedication each of them put into their already demanding schedules as student-athletes. Achieving this high honor is a remarkable tribute to every one of them and on behalf of the entire WCHA family, we wish them all the success in the world."

The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through Association member team Faculty Representatives and approved by the conference membership beginning with the 2005-06 season. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his/her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

This Saturday, February 23, the team will host a moonlight ski at Spidahl's SkiGaard.  There will be a free will donation with all proceeds going to the Otter Tail Nordic Ski Team.  Skis, boots and poles can be rented at the SkiGaard for $2.50 for those 13 and older.  12 and younger can get equipment for free.  There's a full moon and the temperature is supposed to be in the 20's, making for great conditions and a great time for all.

On Sunday, March 3, the Otter Tail Nordic Ski Team will have their meatball dinner at Hope Lutheran Church on County Road 111, just past the YMCA.  This dinner was originally scheduled to be held at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, however, First Lutheran was booked for this makeup date, thus the change to Hope Lutheran Church.  This, too, is a free will offering and serving will take place from 5:00 to 7:00pm.  Everyone is invited.

Softball Camp Scheduled for Early March

The Colleges of St. Scholastica in Duluth and St. Benedict in St. Joseph, along with The Danes travel softball program are collaborating to conduct a softball camp on March 2-3, which will be hosted by the Osakis Softball Program.

The Softball Tune Up camp will include a variety of sessions.  Saturday, March 2 opens up with Pitching and Catching sessions for girls in grades 7-9 at 2:30 and grades 10-12 at 4:15.  In the evening there will be a Coaches Clinic beginning at 6pm.  On Sunday, March 3 the skills session will begin at noon and run until 5pm for grades 7-12.

Jen Walter, a 1981 graduate of Wadena High School, is in her 14th season at The College of St. Scholastica.  This is the third straight year that St. Scholastica has traveled to Central Minnesota and second consecutive year they have been in Osakis.  The first year they were in Wadena.  Also joining Walter will be Rachel Click, who is in her first season at The College of St. Benedict and Tim Husted coach of The Danes for 17 years.

“I’m excited Coach Walter invited me to join her camp staff.  It’s an excellent opportunity for me to work with Central Minnesota athletes, learn from great coaches and promote the College of Saint Benedict and Blazer softball,” said Click, a former All-American shortstop at Gustavus Adolphus.

Husted added, "Considering the success of many high school softball programs and the strong base of skills in the Central MN area, I'm enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring both fundamental and advanced pitching content to the clinic to help them continue to improve and achieve tremendous success".

“We’ve had great turnouts the last two years and we are excited to be back,” said Walter.  “This is a very unique opportunity for softball players in the Central Minnesota area.  With Rachael and Tim joining us they will each bring a different perspective that I think will only enhance the camp.”

The camp and coaches clinic will take place at Osakis Public School.

For more information contact Jen Walter at jwalter@css.edu, or 218-723-6422, John Stigman at jstigman@osakis.k12.mn.us or go to the Spring Tune Up Softball Camp and Coaches Clinic website.
