Numerous Fund Raisers on the Schedule
Several fundraising opportunities are out there for residents of the area with many of them tied to athletic teams.

Perham senior Zach Gabbard, who collapsed during his game in Glyndon last week is in critical condition at the U of M Medical Center in the Twin Cities.  There are a couple of different ways to donate to the Gabbard family to help them defray medical costs.  Visit www.oneclapforzach.com and choose from two options.  To simply make a cash donation click on the Donate link on the site.  The second option is to buy a "One Clap for Zach" t-shirt for $20.  People from the Perham area are asked to buy the t-shirts in person due to increased costs to collecting money online through PayPal and shipping costs.  T-shirts will be availalbe for purchase at all boys and girls basketball games.  All proceeds raised will go to the Gabbard family.

The Hillcrest Comets will be hosting a girl/boy basketball double header beginning at 4:30 Saturday afternoon against Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.  This is the Coaches versus Cancer event with fans encouraged to wear pink.  There will be several opportunities to make a donation at the games.

The second annual Swedish Meatball Dinner Fundraiser for the Otter Tail Nordic Ski Association will be held from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Sunday at the Augustand Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.  A free will offering will be taken with proceeds going to support the youth skiers from Fergus Falls and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy who are members of the team.  Everyone is welcome.

Otter Hockey Team to Host Youth Night
The Fergus Falls Otters Hockey Youth Night will be held on Thursday, January 27 at the Community Ice Area at the West Otter Tail County Fairgrounds.  The Otters will be hosting a Central Lakes Conference boys hockey game with Little Falls that night with the JV playing at 5:30 and the varsity at 7:00pm.

Free admission will be provided to the games for all youth through eighth grade.  The first 100 kids will receive a free goodie bag which will include a puck decal, candy and a concession coupon.  Youth hockey team members are encouraged to show their Otter pride by wearing their youth hockey jersey.  Youth can also participate in the "Best Shot" shooting contest between periods with winners being awarded a trophy and a five dollar concession coupon.

This special night is being presented by the Boys' Hockey Maroon and Gold Booster Club and the Fergus Falls Hockey Association and is being sponsored by Tag Up and JK Sports.

Youth are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item for the local food shelf.

Updating the Rankings
Very few things never change.  One thing that hasn't changed for eight years is the team ranked number one in the Minnesota Class A Girls Gynmastics poll.  The Perham Yellowjackets are once again ranked on top in the latest poll, followed by Becker, Detroit Lakes, New Prague and Big Lake.  Coach Charlie Fleck has arguably built the most dominant dynasty in Minnesota High School sports history.

Two Central Lakes Conference teams show up in the poll with Sartell-St. Stephen ranked seventh and Little Falls fifteenth.  Cambridge-Isanti is number one in AA, followed by Eagan, Northfield, Park of Cottage Grove and St. Cloud Tech.  Other CLC teams ranked include Brainerd at number thirteen and Sauk Rapids-Rice at sixteen.

In Class A wrestling, Jackson County Central is ranked first, followed by Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Kimball Area and Frazee.  Other area teams are Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at number eight and Border West at number ten.  In Class AA wrestling, the top five are Simley, Foley, Kasson-Mantorville and Scott West.  Fergus Falls is ranked eleventh.  In Class AAA, Apple Valley is on top, Saint Michael-Albertville is second, Owatonna third, Hastings fourth and Forest Lake fifth.  Willmar, from the Central Lakes Conference, is ranked twelfth.

The Perham boys basketball team is ranked fifth in Class A with a 7-0 record.  In Class 3A, Bemidji is fourth (8-0) and St. Cloud Apollo is ninth (5-2).

In the Class 3A girls basketball poll there are three Central Lakes Conference teams ranked in the top ten with Sartell-St. Stephen (8-0) fourth, Alexandria (7-0) eighth and Fergus Falls (7-1) tenth.  In Class 2A, Hawley (6-0) is fifth and in Class A, Parkers Prairie (8-0) is second and Hancock (8-0) is fifth.
