Otter Football Season Begins Monday
Head coach Richard Risbrudt reminds Fergus Falls high school student-athletes that the 2010 Otters football season will officially begin with practice on Monday, August 16 at 8:30am with a team meeting in the former high school gymnasium.

All students, both new and returning, entering grades 9 through 12 are welcome to play 9th grade, JV and varsity football this fall.  All registration paperwork must be completed and the activity fee paid at the new Kennedy High School athletic office prior to a player being allowed to participate.

Players that did not receive their football equipment earlier this summer can do so on Monday morning from 7:30 to 8:15am.  Players should enter the previous high school on the east side of the gymnasium and proceed to the football equipment room below.  The two-a-day practices will be held consecutively each morning from 8:30am to 12:30pm for the first two weeks.  Players should bring a sack lunch and drink for the break held between practice sessions at 10:30am.

Parents that have not yet registered their child for youth football in grades 3 through 8 are encouraged to do so immediately.  Please go to www.ffareafootball.org for more information.

BIG FRIDAY Recap
It's become quite a tradition in Fergus Falls.  The first Friday of August is known as BIG FRIDAY.  The day all of the recreation baseball and softball leagues hold their championship games back-to-back at Broadway Park.

You might say it was created for television as in the late 1980's Lake Region Community Television and the Fergus Falls Parks and Recreation Department devised the current format.  I still remember approaching Parks and Recreation Director Butch Benson about the idea and through a few discussions arriving at the format which has been in use for over twenty years.  Since Butch retired, Keith Stafford, Trevor Johnson and now Pam Muxfeldt have overseen the recreation program in Fergus Falls.  Since LRCTV, which was run by Charlie Grunewald, was replaced by Peg Access, Bonnie Schlangen, Robert Fitzgerald and now Jim Francis have put the games on TV and made them available to the public.  I guess I am the only connection to the first Big Friday, which was either in 1988 or 1989 as memory serves me (and it doesn't always!).  I have been privileged to provide play-by-play commentary for this event, which has featured as many as seven games and as few as five, which is what we covered this year.

Now Peg Access (Channels 8 and 18) does the coverage and plays the games back over the local cable outlets.  DVD's of each game are also available at ten dollars each from Peg Access by calling 739-1027 or visiting their studio and offices at 225 West Washington in Fergus Falls.  Approximately 120 kids from T-Ball through Pony League participated in the games on Friday.  Several hundred fans of all ages came and went throughout the seven hours of games, enjoying the action and partaking of concessions provided up by the Fergus Falls Gymnastics Club as a fundraising activity.  The weather was perfect and the games were competitive.

Here are the results from this years games.

Toss
Cubs 23, A's 22

Division II Girls Softball
