|BIG FRIDAY Recap|
It's become quite a tradition in Fergus Falls. The first Friday of August is known as BIG FRIDAY. The day all of the recreation baseball and softball leagues hold their championship games back-to-back at Broadway Park.
You might say it was created for television as in the late 1980's Lake Region Community Television and the Fergus Falls Parks and Recreation Department devised the current format. I still remember approaching Parks and Recreation Director Butch Benson about the idea and through a few discussions arriving at the format which has been in use for over twenty years. Since Butch retired, Keith Stafford, Trevor Johnson and now Pam Muxfeldt have overseen the recreation program in Fergus Falls. Since LRCTV, which was run by Charlie Grunewald, was replaced by Peg Access, Bonnie Schlangen, Robert Fitzgerald and now Jim Francis have put the games on TV and made them available to the public. I guess I am the only connection to the first Big Friday, which was either in 1988 or 1989 as memory serves me (and it doesn't always!). I have been privileged to provide play-by-play commentary for this event, which has featured as many as seven games and as few as five, which is what we covered this year.
Now Peg Access (Channels 8 and 18) does the coverage and plays the games back over the local cable outlets. DVD's of each game are also available at ten dollars each from Peg Access by calling 739-1027 or visiting their studio and offices at 225 West Washington in Fergus Falls. Approximately 120 kids from T-Ball through Pony League participated in the games on Friday. Several hundred fans of all ages came and went throughout the seven hours of games, enjoying the action and partaking of concessions provided up by the Fergus Falls Gymnastics Club as a fundraising activity. The weather was perfect and the games were competitive.
Here are the results from this years games.
A's 23, Pirates 22
Cubs 23, A's 22
Division II Girls Softball
Yankees 15, A's 11
Braves 6, Twins 5
Indians 6, Braves 3
