Gervais Named to Minnesota Team
Lucas Gervais was selected as one of the top 20 skaters who participated in the Great 8 Tournament earlier this month.  That selection puts Lucas on one of two Minnesota teams that will participate in the new CCM Minnesota High School Hockey Invitational on Friday, April 23 through Sunday, April 25 at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Last year was the 25th and final year of the Showcase in Chicago.  Since then it has been moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Because of the extra time and distance involved, Minnesota has decided to have its own tournament.

One Minnesota team will be made up of Hockey 18's who will be next fall's seniors.  They were selected from four teams who tried out at a tournament at the Wakota Arena earlier this month.  The second team consists of graduating seniors picked from the Great 8 as in the past.

The tournament will feature teams from North Dakota, Michigan and Wisconsin, in addition to the two Minnesota teams.  Several scouts will be in attendance as the Minnesota Advanced 16 and 17's final 54 will be taking place at the same time.

Gervais will be coached by former NHL All-Star defenseman Phil Housley.

David Stigen of Fergus Falls has been involved in the Chicago Showcase for many years and is one of the main men behind the formation of this new Minnesota Invitational.  He is the vice-president of Minnesota Hockey.  David will join me Thursday morning at 7:20am on Talkin' Sports, heard live weekday mornings on AM 1250, KBRF.

DeFoe Decides on M State
Wadena-Deer Creek senior Kelly DeFoe has decided to attend M State in Fergus Falls and will play volleyball for the lady Spartans beginning with the 2010-2011 school year.

"I expect Kelly to play a huge role both offensively and defensively for the lady Spartans," said M State head coach Terri Strom.  "She was a very strong middle hitter for the Wolverines and her ability to block will be very important as we anticipate a strong Southern Division schedule again this coming season.  I am thrilled to have her as a member of the Spartan family."

Winners of NCAA Challenge
With the 61-59 win by Duke over Butler on Monday night in the NCAA Men's Basketball championship game, the college basketball season came to an end.  So did our first NCAA Challenge, presented by Kevin Johanson with LPL Financial through www.craigolsonsports.com.  Thanks to all who participated and here are the cash prize winners!

Kevin will be writing the $100 first place check to Jerry Shea, who took the early lead and never looked back, finishing with a score of 209 points.  Kevyn Heck will receive a check for $50 as runner-up with 208 points and the $25 third place prize money will go to Lance Roisum who had 203 points.  All entrants who had more points than our host also were put in a drawing for another $100 and the winner of that drawing was Jason Grunewald who was the lucky one of 88 individuals who bettered Kevin's score of 136 points.  Thanks for being such a great sport Kevin!!

By the way, seven entrants picked Duke as the national champion.  Plans are in the works for an even better NCAA Challenge in 2011!
