Basketball Notes
Pelican Rapids head boys basketball coach Brad Strand has informed www.craigolsonsports.com of decisions made by Eric Shulstad and Tydan Storrusten concerning their college choices, Trevor Peterson resigns in Hawley, and the Fergus Falls Otter boys basketball team has a new head coach.

Strand says that Eric Shulstad has decided to play basketball for Jamestown College in Jamestown, North Dakota and will receive nearly a full scholarship between basketball and academics.

Tydan Storrusten has decided to play basketball for legendary coach, Don Meyer, at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Ty will receive a 100% scholarship to attend Northern State.

Dave Rund, who spent a decade coaching the Fergus Falls girls basketball team, will now take over the varsity boys basketball program for the Otters.  Rund spent last season on the bench with head coach Dave Lehrke as the varsity assistant.

Received this e-mail from Trevor Peterson at Hawley, "Just wanted to let everyone know that due to increased responsibilities as Hawley’s Business Manager, it was believed I needed to resign from coaching.  The board voted to accept such a resignation last (Monday) night.  Coaches, thanks for all the friendships and I wish you all the best of luck."

I hate to see someone of his caliber and ability leave the coaching ranks at such a young age.  He's done a fine job at Hawley and is an excellent promoter of high school basketball and his program.  We wish him well, but certainly hope he's back coaching sometime in the near future.

Otters Make Strong Showing at Elite Meet
Four members of the Fergus Falls girls track and field team traveled to St. Paul on Friday to participate in the Hamline Elite Meet against some of the top competition from around the state.  It was a cold and windy night.

"Considering the conditions of weather and spending the afternoon driving in a van to get there, we had season best results," said Fergus Falls head coach Niki Welde

Lizzy Link ran the 100 meter dash in 13.21 seconds, placing fifteenth out of eighteen runners.

"It was not a PR for her, but it was a respectable run," said Welde.

Haylie Zenner won the 800 with a season best time of 2:18.96.

"She had  a tight field of excellent runners with her for the first 500, then she pulled away fighting the wind to win it," added Coach Welde.

The 4 x 400 meter relay team came in with the seventh best time out of the nine teams entered in the event and finished the race in third place with a season best time of 4:07.59.  Team members were Kylie Zenner, Lizzy Link, Susie Kitzman and Haylie Zenner.

"This meet was a great opportunity for us to compete with some of the top athletes in the state," concluded Coach Welde.

Starting to Catch Up
I have been trying to find the time to get to this much over due column, but haven't had much success.  So, ready or not, I'm going to try to pass along a few items I've been stockpiling, and then add to it later this week.

Fergus Falls High School graduate Derek Harris is golfing for the Bemidji State golf team and the Beavers won the Northern Sun Conference championship on April 10 and 11.  The tournament was held at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City.  Derek shot rounds of 73 and 74 for a two day total of 147, placing him eighth in the conference.  Bemidji State's 589 stroke team total was four ahead of runners-up Concordia-St. Paul and Upper Iowa University.

Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week from Fergus Falls include senior Nikki Clouse and senior Simon Erlandson.  Clouse was named the Softball Performer of the Week in the CLC.  In five games she compiled eight hits in fifteen at bats, including a pair of triples, drove in four runs and had 20 putouts.  Erlandson was the Boys Track and Field Performer of the Week.  On April 14 at the Wild Oats Invitational in Fergus Falls, Erlandson won teh long jump (19-05.5), high jump (5-10) and triple jump (41-04).

The DGF Post 397 American Legion Baseball program has been awarded the 2010 Minnesota State American Legion Baseball Division II Tournament.  State Department Baseball Officers selected DGF at their spring meeting held in Litchfield on April 4.  DGF's Bob Marshall Field in Dilworth will be the site of the annual 8-team tournament that brings the state's District champions together for the right to advance to the central Regional.  The Division II State Tournament is a single elimination tournament with conolation play.

Doug Bruggeman, the main man behind the very popular Shada Shootout 3-on-3 basketball tournament, was informed recently that the elementary gymnasiums in Pelican Rapids would be 'off limits' by the second week of June due to summer construction at the school.  This resulted in organizers of the tournament to move the event up a week.  Noted Bruggeman, "By moving the Shada to the first week of June we were able to get use of the elementary gym but the cafeteria will not be available."  With the elementary cafeteria out of service for the Shada, Bruggeman expects to probably start the elementary division a little earlier than normal on Friday of the tournament and run a little later on Saturday and Sunday when the junior high, high school and post high divisions play.  For information on Shada you can go to their website at www.shada3on3.com or e-mail [email protected].  A registration form can be printed off the website or one will be mailed to you if requested.

Hansen Signs Letter of Intent
Three-sport athlete Derek Hansen, a senior at Fergus Falls High School, has signed his letter of intent to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Hansen will play baseball for the Vikings and may even decide to play some football.  Derek was the quarterback on the Otters state playoff football team last fall and became the fourth player in Fergus Falls boys basketball history to score 1,000 career points this winter.  He is currently playing for the Otter baseball team and will play American Legion baseball again this summer.

Twins Sign Sheffield
The Minnesota Twins have signed outfielder/designated hitter Gary Sheffield.  Sheffield was released by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.  Detroit has to pay Sheffield the 14 million dollars remaining on his contract and his new team will have to pay him the minimum of four hundred thousand dollars.

APRIL FOOLS!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.  Must be the cabin fever I'm feeling with all this snow.  Opening day is only five days away for the Twins, four days for the first major league regular season game on Sunday night between the defending world champion Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves.  The Twins have announced that their opener on Monday night is a sellout and that ticket sales for their entire opening homestand with Seattle are brisk.  The Twins should be able to get out of the gate fast with 11 of their first 14 games at home.

Although they didn't sign Sheffield, there were a few roster moves made by the Twins on Tuesday, including shipping lefthanded relief pitcher Jose Mijares to AAA Rochester.  Mijares had a horrible spring, after being so impressive in his September call-up last year.  He came into camp overweight, had some problems in winter ball and then struggled on the mound in Florida.  I'm sure he'll be back at some point this season and hopefully he can iron out his problems in the minors.  With Mijares being sent down it appears that Brian Duensing will join Craig Breslow as the left handed options for Ron Gardenhire out of the bullpen.

The Twins also sent catcher Drew Butera (yes, his dad is former Twins player Sal Butera) to AAA Rochester.  The organization is very high on him as a major league prospect.  He's ready now defensively, but they would like to see him get a little more productive with the bat.  More seasoning at AAA is required.  Jose Morales has earned the backup catcher spot on the roster with Joe Mauer headed to the disabled list to start the season.  Morales will play behind regular backup Mike Redmond.

R.A. Dickey and Philip Humber will both pitch today against Tampa Bay with one of them slated to make the big club as a long reliever and the other destined to be reassigned.  Humber is out of options and Dickey's claim to fame is that he is a knuckleball pitcher, so I'm thinking Humber will be kept and Dickey will be asked to take a minor league assignment to AAA Rochester.

The final two roster spots are for utility infielders and there is quite a battle raging for those spots between Brendan Harris, Brian Buscher and Matt Tolbert.  Gardenhire likes all three of them, but since he is set on taking twelve pitchers North, one of them will be the odd man out, which is too bad.  I think they all deserve to be on the roster and I would like to see the Twins break camp with just eleven pitchers.  It would seem to me that six relievers would be adequate, especially with the starting pitching staff we have in place.  Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Glenn Perkins, Franscisco Liriano and Nick Blackburn have all looked good this spring and can give the Twins six innings-plus consistently in their starts.  That means you need relievers for the seventh through ninth innings.  Six guys should be able to handle that.  Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain, Luis Ayala and Joe Nathan would join Breslow and Duensing or Humber to form what I think would be a very good bullpen.  We'll know soon enough what Gardy and his coaches and the front office have decided.  Can't wait till Monday night!
