The Heart O' Lakes Conference girls basketball race is shaping up to be a good one as we turn the calendar to 2007. D-G-F (5-0), Barnesville (5-1), Hawley (5-1) and West Central Area (4-2) are all legitimate challengers to the HOL title. Lake Park-Audubon (2-3), Perham (2-3) and Pelican Rapids (2-4) are all capable of pulling off an upset on any given night.
Hawley is by far the best shooting team in the conference, hitting 47.4% of their field goal attempts. D-G-F is second at 41.5%. When it comes to 3-point shooting, Barnesville (42.4%) and D-G-F (41.9%) are far ahead of the rest of the pack. From the free throw line, D-G-F hits 68.3% of their shots and Barnesville is at 67.7%.
Individually, Angie Jetvig of the Nuggets is the best shooter (70.1) with Jennifer Lopez of D-G-F the best from behind the 3-point arc (59.1%). From the foul line, Sam Spaeth of Hawley hits 83.3% of her shots, followed by Kendra Vipond of West Central Area and Erica Nord of Barnesville at 81.8%, and Lopez at 80.8%.
Scoring leaders are Jetvig (17.7), Lopez (16), Jenna Green (16) of D-G-F and Nord (16). Christine Moe of the Lady Trojans leads the rebounding category with 8.3 per game, followed by Lexi Thorson of Pelican Rapids and Jetvig at 7.7, and Nord at 7.3 per game. Nord is the steals leader at 8 per game and Lopez tops the assist chart at 6 per game. Kelcey Lass of the Vikings is second at 5.3 assists per game and Chelsea Nordquist of Frazee averages five per game.
Hawley (4-0) is the boys leader in the HOL with West Central Area (4-1), Perham (4-1), D-G-F (3-1) and Breckenridge (3-1) hot on their trail. Barnesville (2-2), Pelican Rapids (1-4), Ulen-Hitterdal (1-4), Lake Park-Audubon (0-4) and Frazee (0-4) round out the conference standings heading into the New Year.
Pelican Rapids is the top shooting team in the HOL, hitting 55.1% (109/198) of their total field goals, and West Central Area has the best percentage (42.7%) from 3-point range. From the free throw line, Breckenridge is number one with 73.8% success.
Individually, Jake Driscoll of D-G-F is the leading scorer (21.8), with Eric Clute of Hawley second (19.8) and Brent Halverson of Barnesville third (18.8).
Eric Shulstad of Pelican Rapids leads the HOL with 11 rebounds per game. Cody Schenck of Hawley is second with 9 rebounds per game and Halverson of the Trojans third with 8.5.
Steal leaders are Andrew VanHavermaet (4.8) of Hawley, Tyler Krump (4.4) of West Cetnral Area and Beau Sorenson (4.0) of Hawley.
Brandon Fankhanel of Barnesville leads the conference with 8.5 assists per game, followed by Driscoll with 7.8 assists per game and Tydan Storrusten of Pelican Rapids with seven assists per game.
Jamie Magnuson of WCA is the leader in two-point field goal percentage (67.7%) with Storrusten second (66.7%) and Fankhanel third (60%). Tyler Bekkerus of D-G-F is the number one 3-point shooter (62.5%), followed by Luther Holm of Lake Park-Audubon (57.1%) and Adam Ruud of West Central Area (53.3%). Halverson leads in total field goal percentage (59.2%), with Zach Lundquist of Pelican Rapids second (58.1) and Shulstad of the Vikings third (58%). Casey Lipp of Breckenridge (86.7%) was first in free throw percentage, with Jake Allen of the Cowboys and Troy Amundson of Ulen-Hitterdal tied for second (80%).
